Museum of Bad Art | Atlas Obscura - Finally, an art museum for those of us with no taste

Underneath the Dedham Community Theater, this little gem of an art gallery has since 1994 sought to preserve horrible artwork. Known as MOBA (museum of bad art) started one night when founder Scott Wilson pulled the first piece, dubbed Lucy in the Field with Flowers, out of a trash heap. Since then, it has grown into two galleries with numerous pieces.

Woot : 10 More New Euphemisms From The Mark Sanford Affair (fav: upholding the Monroe Doctrine)

FactCheck.org: Is Obama planning to increase the federal tax on gun ammunition by 500 percent? Um, NO! FFS, People, THINK!

During the 2008 presidential campaign, the National Rifle Association claimed that Obama would "increase federal taxes on guns and ammunition by 500 percent" as a part of what it called "Obama's 10-Point Plan to 'Change' the Second Amendment." That was a mailer distributed to the organization's members as part of an advertising campaign, which we said at the time "distorts Obama's position on gun control beyond recognition." Regarding the ammo tax claim, we said then that Obama hadn't pressed for any such tax as a U.S. senator and was not proposing one as a presidential candidate.

Now we can report that Obama has proposed no such tax since becoming president. And we find no evidence that he or his administration has any plans to do so. Though it is often repeated and widely believed by gun owners, this tax claim is a myth.

Yet another right-wing chain email campaign with no basis in reality. No wonder they are so dismissive of the 'reality-based' community. Who needs reality, when you can just make up anything you want and 30% of the country will blindly believe you because they hate Democrats so much?

Morons, we're surrounded by morons, and they seem to really like chain emails...

Barney Frank Files Bill To Decriminalize Pot - Like, Awesome, Dude!

Frank has filed a bill that would eliminate federal penalties for personal possession of less than 100 grams of marijuana.

It would also make the penalty for using marijuana in public just $100.

"I think John Stuart Mill had it right in the 1850s," said Congressman Frank, "when he argued that individuals should have the right to do what they want in private, so long as they don't hurt anyone else. It's a matter of personal liberty. Moreover, our courts are already stressed and our prisons are over-crowded. We don't need to spend our scarce resources prosecuting people who are doing no harm to others."

Seriously. I think it's a great idea. And I have to admit that part of the fun behind this sort of proposal is watching the two factions of the Republican party - their libertarian branch and their family values branch - get all tangled up.

Oh, come on, Republicans do this to Democrats all the time, and it's even easier for them because there are about 123,500 factions in the Democratic party (maybe more, it's 3 in the afternoon and I haven't counted since this morning...).

The Great Stalacpipe Organ | Atlas Obscura --> Combination music geek and science nerd heaven

Deep in the Luray Caverns of Virginia sits the largest musical instrument in the world. The Great Stalacpipe Organ consists of a normal looking organ, but instead of pipes the organ is wired to soft rubber mallets poised before stalactites. When the keyboard is played, the entire subterranean landscape becomes the instrument.

Yeah, yeah, I'm still a nerd. I think this is amazing.

MO State Rep Cynthia Davis on the subject of hunger in children. How do people like this get elected?!?

Hunger can be a positive motivator.

Seriously, I'd like to know how often Rep Davis used hunger to motivate her children? Never? Yeah, I certainly hope so. Protecting our children is a pretty basic imperative. Have conservatives become so obsessed with being anti-government that they've started to pretend children are not worthy of a helping hand from us all? Yeah, the churches will take care of it, so you can quietly ignore the problem and pretend it doesn't exist, you moron. Churches do great charitable works, but they do not have the breadth or depth to stand in for a centrally managed program. And the more important problem with relying on the churches is very, very simple: Only a small fraction of the population donates significantly to the churches, so in the absence of a govt program, the feeding of children would fall upon a small minority. Think that would meet the need? Think again.

Oh, and stop using our children as political props, you absolutely evil harridan.

F$ck, I really hate people who abuse children. In every way. Hunger is a positive motivator? So is terror, so is pain, so is everything bad - does that mean that we allow our children to suffer deliberately, Rep Davis? Shit. Go to Hades, where you so clearly belong.

Why is it OK to globally restrict the driving of teenagers but not senior citizens?

Media_httpcachebostoncombonzaifbaglobegraphic20090617wassermanseniorsoped12452515088091jpg_boshepiwtcescgk

For ever immature teenager, there's a senior citizen who's physically incapable because of old age. In fact, as the population ages, there's more than one. Many teens are NOT immature, just like some seniors are not physically limited.

So we think of *testing* seniors, but then not restricting them in any way? But we *test* teenagers *AND* restrict them to certain hours of the day and certain passengers. Teens can't drive late at night, because presumably they'll be partying. Seniors can't see well at night, early OR late, so why aren't they restricted, too?

Not saying anybody will like it, but the idea that we can't restrict the seniors because it infringes on their rights and limits their mobility is pure BS. Driving isn't a right, it's a privilege, and we don't worry about limiting the mobility of other large groups of drivers. A little less hypocrisy would be appreciated, folks...

Why is anyone surprised President Obama supports same-sex partner benefits and also DOMA? Weren't these people paying attention during the campaign?

President Obama will sign a memorandum Wednesday granting health care and other benefits to the same-sex partners of federal employees, two senior administration officials said.

President Obama has been criticized by gay rights activists for not doing more since taking office.

President Obama has been criticized by gay rights activists for not doing more since taking office.

The signing will take place in the Oval Office and follows sharp criticism of the president over a Justice Department motion filed last week in support of the Defense of Marriage Act -- which opposes same-sex marriage -- that used the government's interest in opposing incestuous marriages to support its position against same-sex marriage.

Seriously, I don't get it. Conservatives are mad that he's doing anything that recognizes non-hetero relationships, but he has said all along the he supports civil unions. And liberals - what are you thinking? Did you believe GOP propaganda and expect him to change his position once elected?

For once, we have a politician who is doing what he said he would do. Why is this a problem?

A museum of phallic specimens? Yep. The Internets FTW!

The Icelandic Phallological Museum in Husavik bills itself as “probably the only museum in the world to contain a collection of phallic specimens belonging to all the various types of mammal found in a single country.” Included in the museum are 204 "penises and penile parts" belonging to 45 different species, including 54 specimens from 16 different kinds of whale, and one lifted off a "rogue polar bear.

Some, err, interesting pics available at the site...
